With round 2 (Motegi) been postponed due to the volcanic ash we headed straight to round 3, Jerez.
Rossi had injured himself during motocross (away from MotoGP) and struggled with qualifying so attempting to complete a full-race would be a huge up-hill climb.
Pedrosa started will in pole-position while Rossi climbed 2 places in the first lap leaving him 2nd, just behind Pedrosa, the first few laps saw both Rossi and Pedrosa pull away from the pack behind them which was lead by Hayden on the Ducati, Stoner on the other Ducati managed to get ahead of Lorenzo, however, Lorenzo the next lap pulled the position back and started to close in on Hayden.
A few more laps had passed, Hayden made a mistake and let Lorenzo through, while Rossi was finding it hard to keep up with Pedrosa’s pace.
The laps went on and Lorenzo seemed to just not be affected by tires degrading and closed right up to Rossi and then passed him with 6 laps remaining, Lorenzo’s next target was Pedrosa who was still leading the race with over a 2 second gap.
Lorenzo started piling on the pressure trimming the 2 second gap down to just under half a second with 2 laps remaining, Lorenzo tried to overtake Pedrosa 2 times and failed, the last lap started with Lorenzo all over the back of Pedrosa and forces him wide giving Lorenzo the lead while Pedrosa finishes 2nd, Rossi in 3rd followed by Hayden then Stoner respectively 4th and 5th.
