Formula 1: The Season Finale
2 November 2008 – 8:04pmIt was the final race of the F1 season which also was the last event on ITV, as from 2009 F1 will be broadcast on the BBC. Bernie Ecclestone (F1 CEO) later said in an interview when questioned
“What can the BBC broadcast? Live Qualifying, Races?” his reply was
“Anything you want, you have all the rights”.
This means that it’s quite possible that they’ll even broadcast Free Practices and Warm ups via the Red button and the BBC Sport website, I really hope they do that.
Let’s not forget David Coulthard, this is his last race of his career, he was an incredible driver no one can deny that he put Schumacher to his limits and beyond back when Schumacher was the king of the field.
Hamilton only needed 5th position or better to become the youngest ever F1 champion, without further delay, on to the race.
The race was about to begin but then it pissed down with rain for roughly 2 minutes, they then declared the race to start 10 minutes late and also gave each team the time they needed to change tyres if they wanted. The race started and on the first lap there was an incident in which the Safety Car was deployed, this ended after a lap or two then the race resumed its normal pace. Coulthard sadly crashed out on the first lap which was the end to his amazing career.
The race then on was pretty much straight forward after they came in and switched back to the dry/slick tyres until 5 laps to go when the rain started to fall again.
It came down to the final lap, Glock stayed on the dry tyre and therefore pushed Hamilton to 6th (meaning he wouldn’t win the championship), Glock was on the final corner was slowed right down both Vettel and Hamilton passed him, thus Hamilton became the champion, Massa took the race win and ended 2nd in the championship.
Personally, I believe Glock took matters into his own hands and slowed down to let Hamilton take the championship as both Glock and Hamilton went through the same GP2 years together and I’m sure there will come a day where Hamilton returns the favour.
All in all it has been an amazing season, one of the best I’ve ever experienced (apart from the Häkkinen vs Schumacher back in the late 90′s), congratulations Lewis Hamilton, you deserved it, maybe you should wear a shirt just like Valentino Rossi did in MotoGp stating “sorry for the delay!”.
I’m very sure that Hamilton will become one of the (if not the) greatest F1 driver of all time.
